    The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, stated this Wednesday at the Forum Europa in Brussels that “today all Member States understand that Europe must assume responsibility for its own defense”.

    Roberta Metsola stated this at a briefing organised by New Economy Forum in the EU capital, where she analysed the current geostrategic landscape and the need for the European Union to take responsibility for its security, since “a more secure Europe means taking charge of our destiny”.

    Metsola asserted that for “too long” the EU has relied on others to protect us, but considered that “Russia's brutal war in Ukraine made it clear that those days are over”.

    This was stated by Marta Kos at a briefing organised by New Economy Forum, where she analysed the different speeds of the candidate countries EU accession processes and the window of opportunity that has opened for these countries during the Commission's term.

    Kos recalled that, in 1979, the then President of the European Parliament, Simone Veil, described the EU in her first speech "as an island of freedom surrounded by regimes where force prevails".

    Marta Kos stated this at a briefing organised by New Economy Forum in the EU capital, where she discussed, among other issues, Moldova's accession process to the EU.

    Kos explained that the European Commission is working to open the first working groups with Ukraine and Moldova as soon as possible, with the aim, first and foremost, of building an independent judiciary "capable of effectively detecting corruption, guaranteeing the freedom and independence of the media, and ensuring fair public procurement".
